Q4 Holiday Direct Mail: Planning Your Most Profitable Campaign
Q4 can be one of the most productive times of the year for direct mail—but it is also one of the easiest times to get the timing wrong.
At DirectMail.com, years of campaign history have shown us that holiday-season performance is not consistent from week to week. Crowded mailboxes, travel, shopping and holiday distractions can affect response—even from lists that normally perform well.
That makes the in-home date especially important.
Know the Tough Windows
For most non-holiday-related campaigns, we generally want to avoid mail arriving around Thanksgiving.
There can be a strong opportunity immediately after Thanksgiving and into early December. But once non-holiday mail begins arriving after roughly the first week of December, response can become more challenging as Christmas approaches.
That does not mean December mail doesn't work.
It means the message needs to fit the season.
A Christmas appeal, holiday offer or year-end fundraising message naturally belongs in December. A general acquisition campaign may be better timed for another window.
Mail Smarter, Not Just More
Our campaign history has also shown that during crowded Q4 periods, even good-performing lists can underperform.
The answer is not necessarily to stop mailing.
Instead, reduce marginal prospecting volume, concentrate on your strongest lists and audience segments, and stay in front of existing customers or donors.
Q4 is often the time to mail smarter—not simply mail more, and not automatically mail less.
Don't Overlook New Year's
One window we particularly like is just before the New Year.
As people move past Christmas and begin thinking about the year ahead, messages built around a fresh start, planning, improvement or taking action can become much more relevant.
Plan Around the In-Home Date
In Q4, a mailing that arrives a week late can land in a completely different marketing environment.
That is why we recommend beginning every holiday-season campaign with three questions:
Who should receive it? What is the offer? When should it be in the home?
Then build the campaign backward from there.
At DirectMail.com, we believe successful direct mail is not only about what you mail and who you mail to—but when the customer is most likely to pay attention.
